Young Drummer of the Year 2018 – Winner

Its that time of year again when Mike’s competition reaches the top ten finalists in the UK. Great camaraderie, as ever, amongst the participants (and their families). It is always such a positive occasion. With a fantastic judging panel this year of industry heavyweights, and returning entrants – who have gone on to have careers in music. Jon Phillips on cameras for this one (down the front). Audio from the desk so a little bit of something added in the edit to make it a little less ‘dry’

New Video Feature for Mike Dolbear about the British Drum Company

Shot in one day at their factory/HQ in Stockport. Additional footage of Ian Matthews was grabbed at a Kasabian soundcheck @ The O2 London before one of their shows. This went live on the first day of the NAMM Show 2018 in Anaheim. I have very rarely come across such a well thought out team of enthusiasts – who just love their jobs – building very good drum kits in the UK. All interviews shot on 5d MK2 with a Sony X-70 recording AT Pro70 audio on at least one channel. Edited in Grass Valley Edius 25fps timeline.

Steinberg Studio Sessions – Deniz Koyu

Shot near Dusseldorf with the fab Chris Barker and Will Seelig
It was a new set up for Deniz, but that didn’t phase him. This is typical of the series for Steinberg, either the artist makes a track from scratch or takes an old one and tells you what and why they effected their music in the way they did. Travelling light (as most of our glass, and bodies) have to travel in handbagage…….. so just the 4 cameras then 🙂 Audio into a Tascam DR680

Mac DeMarco – Eating Like A Kid (Roland Sessions)

I must admit I hadn’t heard of Mac before I walked into this rented flat he had in Shoreditch. Jamie @ Roland has a brilliant eye for; and super way with; Artists, that means he gets opportunities to get unreleased content like this. Shot and edited basically the same day. Edius for the visuals and Sonar for some mixing of the audio. Into the Tascam DR-40 from a Rode NT1a, and a Red5 dynamic mic hanging over the cute amp.

A very strange video shoot for Mapex UK

I have done some very fun things with the team at Mapex in the UK, but this one has to take the buscuit. In fact you just have to watch it…..

As one viewer commented on youtube –  they thought they could see the audio device swinging between 2 trees – this isn’t far from the truth. Kick and snare were mic’d up – and the over heads were from the Tascam DR-40 hanging above the kit. I was wearing protection myself, but the gear was pretty ‘open’.
